Abstract Baguette (2004) has criticized the use of patch-occupancy metapopulation models in conservation. I discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of different types of metapopulation models, taking for granted that there is a need to develop both general theory and predictive models.
The metapopulation capacity should find many applications in metapopulation ecology, landscape ecology and conservation biology.

In this model, persistence requires an adequate rate of migration among patches (Harrison and Taylor 1997). 2. Metapopulation Ecology Ilkka Hanski Oxford Series in Ecology and Evolution. Written by a world renowned biologist, this volume offers a comprehensive synthesis of current research in this rapidly expanding area of population biology. Metapopulation theory is used to analyse the effects of habitat fragmentation on birds in the temperate zone, integrating various explanations for the paucity of species in isolated ecotopes. There is some evidence that turnover of local populations occurs in fragmented systems. Metapopulation theory suggests that additional patchiness may be caused by the dynamics of local extinctions and recolonisations.

De lokala populationerna är så små att de löper en viss risk att dö ut, men de lokala utdöendena kompenseras av att nya lokala populationer uppstår genom kolonisationer. Metapopulation is a population in which individuals are spatially distributed in a habitat in two or more subpopulations. Populations of butterflies and coral-reef fishes are good examples of metapopulation . Human activities and natural disasters are the main causes of metapopulation and increase the population that occurs as metapopulatons. Metapopulation (composite population) Set of local populations within some larger area, where typically migration from one local population or at least some other patches is possible; (definition of metapopulation has broadened in last five years).
Metapopulation theory developed in terrestrial ecology provides applicable frameworks for interpreting the role of local and regional processes in shaping species distribution patterns. Yet, empirical testing of metapopulation models on microbial communities is essentially lacking. The term metapopulation was coined by Richard Levins in 1969 to describe a model of population dynamics of insect pests in agricultural fields, but the idea has been most broadly applied to species in naturally or artificially fragmented habitats. In Levins' own words, it consists of "a population of populations". Metapopulation theory is largely based on a dynamic aspect of population maintenance that embraces a regional perspective (Levins, 1970). Generally the equilibrium, or strictest, view embraces a balance between periods of extinction and colonization, with migration between patches.
