2019-01-25 Response to John Manoochehri Response to John Manoochehri Gößling‐Reisemann, Stefan 2009-08-01 00:00:00 Before I begin to answer the points John Manoochehri (2009) has raised, I have to clarify that my articles on resource consumption ( Gößling‐Reisemann 2008a, 2008b ) were not intended to criticize Nicholas Georgescu‐Roegen's (1971) work in general or even his valuable contribution Arnim Von Gleich, Universität Bremen, Technology Design and Development Department, Department Member. Studies Diffusion of Innovations, Technological Innovation, and Design Innovation. A new method is presented to quantify the potential of a system to concentrate or dilute substances. The approach is based on a comprehensive material flow analysis and Shannon's statistical entropy function that is transformed by a three-step procedure. The result is a new function that can be applied to any defined system with known mass-flows and substance concentrations.

Till Zimmermann. IntroductionThe conservation and considerate use of non-renewable resources is an important element of sustainability goals and strategies in Germany [1] and the EU [2]. These strategies aim at improving material efficiency, Mariela Tapia, Max Spengler, Stefan Gößling-Reisemann, Digitalization of Power Systems – How Vulnerable Is the System and What Are the Strategies to Increase the System’s Resilience?, Smart Cities/Smart Regions – Technische, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Innovationen, 10.1007/978-3-658-25210-6, (133-147), (2019).

In this broad field there are two different approaches. The first one is based solely on topological concepts, and uses metrics such as mean path length, clustering coefficient, efficiency and betweenness centrality, among many others. The second, hybrid approach The ambitious targets for renewable energies in Germany indicate that the steady growth of installed capacity of the past years will continue for the coming decades. This development is connected with significant material flows—primary material demand as well as secondary material flows.
